A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually a perennial conifer such as spruce, pine or fir or an artificial tree of similar appearance, associated with the celebration of Christmas. The modern Christmas tree was developed in medieval Livonia (now Estonia and Latvia) and in modern-day Germany, where Protestant Germans brought decorated trees to their homes. It gained popularity beyond the Lutheran areas of Germany and the Baltic countries during the second half of the nineteenth century, at first among the upper classes.
The tree was traditionally decorated with “roses made of colored paper, apples, wafers, tinsel, [and]candy”. In the 18th century, it began to light up with candles, which were finally replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification. Today, there is a wide variety of traditional ornaments, such as garlands, ornaments, garlands and candy canes. An angel or a star could be placed on the top of the tree to represent the Angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem of the Nativity. Edible items, such as gingerbread, chocolate and other sweets, are also popular and are tied or hung from tree branches with ribbons.
In the western Christian tradition, Christmas trees are erected in various ways on days such as the first day of Advent or even Christmas Eve, depending on the country; the customs of the same faith maintain that the two traditional days in which the Christmas decorations are eliminated, such as the Christmas tree, are the nights of twelfth night and, if they are not eliminated that day, the Candelaria, the last of which ends the Christmas season-epiphany. in some denominations
The Christmas tree is sometimes compared to the “Yule tree”, especially in discussions about its folkloric origins.
